I am writing to show support for UMN Teamsters and their demands. I am also frustrated and disappointed at the university administration’s refusal to negotiate a fair contract and avoid a disruptive strike. The university needs to come back to the table with the Teamsters and put forward a real wage increase. UMN has already negotiated a 3.5% wage increase for this year and next year with the graduate student union. Your unwillingness to offer this same wage pattern to the Teamsters is unacceptable. If other union workers on campus are receiving a 3.5% wage increase, Teamsters should receive the same. The university also needs to agree to a higher shift differential for Teamsters who sacrifice their nights to work at the university. The current shift differential for Teamsters is $0.55 an hour and has not been raised in 30 years. The Teamsters shift differential is currently one of the lowest on campus, less than that received by hourly student workers even. The university also needs to agree to strong anti-harassment protections for Teamsters. In recent years, working conditions have deteriorated in departments like Twin Cities Dining where workplace harassment and discipline have skyrocketed. So far you have been unwilling to agree to strong anti-harassment language in the Teamsters contract with full arbitration rights, even though this has already been agreed to with other campus unions. Teamsters are the lifeblood of the university and make our campuses run. Teamsters should be treated no different than any other university employee. A strike by the Teamsters during move-in week will cause enormous disruptions to campus operations during one of the most important times of the year. The university administration needs to get its act together, settle this contract, and avoid a worst possible outcome before midnight on Tuesday.
